INTRODUCTION TO GEOG F1.swf" width=800 height=600>

Geography is an interesting subject that you will enjoy . It has a variety of built in content, exercises , quizzes and games that will help you understand and interpret correctly geographical concepts. In addition it will motivate you to learn more about our surrounding.

Background to Knowledge

In primary school you learnt Social Studies. In this subject, you learnt about  natural resources  like relief features, climate, soil, vegetation and animals. You also learnt about economic activities.

Objectives:

By the end of the session, you should be able to:-

  1. Link some of the concept learnt in Social Studies to geography.
  2. Define the term Geography
  3. Define the term Environment
  4. Describe the branches of Geography
  5. Explain the importance of studying Geography.

Definitions

Let us now look at the definitions of Geography and Environment

Definition of Geography

Geography is the scientific study of the earth as the home of human kind. The term Geography is derived from the Greek words: Geo and Graphien. Geo means Earth and graphien means to write, draw or describe.

These two words are combined to form Geographein, which means to describe, write about or draw the earth. The description includes the Earth's physical features, resources, climate, animals and people as well as their distribution and the relationships between them.

Definition of Environment

Environment refers to external conditions that surround living things. These conditions influence the behavior or activities of living things. There are two kinds of environment. These are physical and human environment.

Branches of Geography

There are two main branches of Geography

Physical geography

Human geograpy

Physical geography

In physical geography, there are four main sub-branches. These are geomorphology, climatology, biogeography and the solar systems. In geomorphology, we learn about formation of mountains, lakes, waterfalls and Rift valleys. In climatology we learn about weather and climate. In Biogeography we learn about soils, animals and vegetation. In the solar system, we learn about planets, asteroids, and moons.

Human Geography

In human geography, we study political geography, economic geography and population geography. Different skills are used in the study and understanding of physical and human geography. These skills include the reading and interpretation of maps and photographs, statistics and fieldwork.

Acquire awareness on the management and conservation of the environment.

Geography enhances national unity

Its a career subject

Geography is a career subject such as geology, engineering, surveying, remote sensing, meteorology and teaching.

Geography enhances international awareness, interactions, and co-operation and teaches interdependence among people.

It also helps us to manage time properly.

It provides valuable information that can be used in various human activities.

Helps us acquire positive attitudes and values which enable us to become useful members of the society.

Relationship between Geography and Other Disciplines

Geography is closely related to many disciplines. This relationship is clearly shown in the illustration on the screen.

History describes past events while geography explains where these events took place.

In addition, history uses geographical tools such as charts and maps to explain some events of the past.

Geography deals with the distribution of natural resources while economics adds value to the resources.
Biology is the study of plants and animals while geography tries to explain the distribution of these and their importance.

Mathematics deals with the use of numbers and shapes to calculate represent or describe things while geography uses mathematical formulae to calculate the area of regions, population densities and uses statistics to draw graphs.
Agriculture is the cultivation of crops and the rearing of livestock while Geography deals with types of farming and factors influencing the distribution of the farming activities.

Demography is the scientific study of the number of people, how many of the people are male or female, their ages and rate at which people are born or die. On its part Geography deals with the distribution of people on the earths surface and how the population changes with time.

Geology is the scientific study of the structure and composition of the earth. Geographers use this information to understand how the natural features influence human activities.
Meteorology is the scientific study of the atmospheric conditions while Geography deals with how the atmospheric conditions affect human activities.
