Great circles and small circles.

The knowledge of longitudes and latitudes is important in our day today life and especially when travelling in various parts of the world. This topic will help us discover how to determine distances travelled on the surface of the earth.

GREAT CIRCLE AND SMALL CIRCLE

A great circle is a circle drawn on a sphere such that its centre is the same as the centre of the sphere. It bisects the sphere into two equal parts. When we consider the earth as a sphere the equator and all lines of longitudes are great circles.
A small circle is the one drawn on a sphere such that its centre is not the same as that of the sphere. All latitudes apart from the equator are small circles.
